I run a flight school, which means I have spent more hours than I can count sitting near people while they learn to do something the human body was never designed to do. Over the years, you stop noticing the flying and start noticing the people. And the thing I keep coming back to, the thing I now believe more than almost anything else about health, is this: the cockpit is a lie detector for your lifestyle.
Whatever you have been quietly getting away with on the ground shows up the moment the wheels leave it. The skipped breakfast. The one glass of water since 7 am. The five hours of sleep you told yourself was fine. Down here, your body has slack to cover for you. Up there, working a little harder on a little less oxygen, the slack runs out. I have watched sharp, competent adults go foggy and irritable and slow within twenty minutes of takeoff, and I would say nine times out of ten it had nothing to do with their ability to fly. It was what they ate, or did not drink, or did not sleep the night before.
I am not a doctor. I run a flight training business, and I have had a front-row seat to the same handful of mistakes on repeat. What surprised me is that the fixes are not aviation secrets. They are things every one of us could use, whether or not we ever go near an aircraft. So here is what teaching people to fly taught me about living well on the ground.
The blood sugar crash you feel at 3 pm is the same one that scares me at 3,000 feet
One of my early lessons came from a student I will call the Energy Drink Guy. He would turn up buzzing, no breakfast, a tall can of something fluorescent in his hand, ready to go. For the first twenty minutes he was brilliant. Then, every single time, he would fall off a cliff. Snappy, distracted, fumbling checks he had nailed the week before. We would land, I would put food in front of him, and ten minutes later the good student was back.
What was happening is something called reactive hypoglycemia. A big hit of sugar spikes your blood glucose, your body overcorrects with a flood of insulin, and you crash below where you started. In an office, that crash is a bad meeting. In an aircraft, it is a safety problem, which is why aviation medical advice is unusually specific about it. Pilots are steered toward low glycemic index snacks and told to eat something small every two to three hours rather than one big load. Protein, fat, and fibre slow the whole thing down and keep the line flat instead of spiky.
Here is the part that matters for you, on the ground, at a desk. That 3 pm slump you blame on your job, or your boss, or your inbox, is very often just a blood sugar valley you dug yourself at lunch. The pilots I train learn to eat for a flat, boring, reliable energy curve. Nuts, an apple with a bit of cheese, real food in small amounts. I started eating the same way and my afternoons stopped falling apart. Nobody needs to be at 30,000 feet to benefit from not crashing at 3.
Mild dehydration does not announce itself. It just makes you worse
If I could tattoo one fact onto every new student, it would be this. A study out of the University of North Dakota put forty pilots through flight and cognition tests, and the ones who were even mildly dehydrated scored measurably worse on both their flying and their spatial thinking than the ones who had kept their fluids up. Not dramatically dehydrated. Mildly. A one to two percent drop in body water is enough to blunt your concentration, your memory, and your reaction time.
The cruel part is that dehydration at that level does not feel like thirst. It feels like fatigue, or a dull headache, or being a bit slow and cloudy and not knowing why. In the air that is dangerous, because those same symptoms overlap with far more serious things and a tired brain is bad at telling the difference. Cabin air is punishingly dry, so it happens faster up there, but the mechanism is identical to the one that gets you at your desk on a summer afternoon.
I now watch students reach for water the way I watch them reach for the checklist, as a default, not a reaction to feeling bad. On the ground, the lesson is almost annoyingly simple. Before you diagnose yourself with burnout or a bad mood or an early night owed, drink a large glass of water and wait twenty minutes. An embarrassing amount of the time, that was the whole problem.
The rule that taught me to stop treating my body as invincible
Here is a piece of aviation culture that stops people in their tracks at dinner parties. On most commercial flights, the captain and the first officer are not allowed to eat the same meal. They eat different food, often prepared separately, for one blunt reason. If a meal is contaminated, the airline does not want both pilots incapacitated at the same time.
This is not paranoia dreamed up in a boardroom. It comes from real incidents where crews were struck down by food poisoning in the air, and in Australia gastrointestinal illness has been the single leading cause of pilot incapacitation over the past decade. So the industry built a rule around the humbling assumption that your body can betray you at the worst possible moment, and planned for it.
I find that mindset quietly useful in ordinary life. Not the specific rule, but the humility behind it. Most of us move through our days assuming our body will simply cooperate, that we can run it on fumes and fix it later. The people I train learn early that the body is equipment with inputs and limits, and that respecting those limits is not weakness, it is competence. That reframing changed how I treat my own health more than any single diet or fad ever has.
The twenty-six-minute nap is real science, not laziness
Somewhere along the way I stopped feeling guilty about napping, and I have NASA to thank. A well-known NASA study on long-haul crews gave one group a planned rest of around forty minutes during cruise. On average, they fell asleep in under six minutes and slept about twenty-six. Compared to the crews who pushed through, the ones who rested were dramatically more alert and quicker to react during the critical descent and landing, with the dangerous micro-lapses in attention all but wiped out.
That is where the famous power nap comes from. Somewhere around twenty to thirty minutes is the sweet spot. Long enough to genuinely restore you, short enough that you do not sink into deep sleep and wake up groggier than you started. It is not a trick or a hack. It is your brain being given a small, well-timed chance to reset.
I keep the same rule on the ground now. A short, early-afternoon nap before a demanding evening is not a sign that I am failing to cope. It is maintenance. If it is good enough for a crew flying a widebody across the Pacific, it is good enough for a Tuesday.
Sitting still is a slow problem you can fix by moving a little
The last thing flying hammered home is what happens when you sit still for hours. Long flights carry a well-documented rise in the risk of blood clots forming in the legs, because staying folded into a seat lets blood pool where it should be moving. The advice for pilots and passengers alike is unglamorous and effective. Move your legs, flex your calves, get up when you can, keep the fluids going.
Then I looked at my own life and realised my desk was just a short-haul flight I never got up from. Same seated hours, same stillness, same pooling, minus the destination. So I stole the aviation habit. Stand up, walk about, do the ridiculous little calf pumps under the desk that nobody can see. It costs nothing and your circulation does not care whether you are at 35,000 feet or in your kitchen.
What the sky gave back to the ground
None of this is exotic. Eat for steady energy instead of sugar highs. Drink water before you feel like you need it. Respect that your body has limits and plan around them. Nap without shame. Move more than you sit. I did not learn any of it from a wellness book. I learned it from watching ordinary people get exposed by a demanding environment, and then watching the same people transform once they fixed the basics.
The cockpit just strips away the excuses faster than daily life does. Up there, cutting corners on food, water, and sleep has immediate, visible consequences. Down here, the consequences are slower and easier to ignore, which is exactly why so many of us do. My students taught me to stop ignoring them. You do not need an aircraft to learn the same thing. You just have to be honest about what you are running on.
